They fought in every theatre, from the muddy trenches of the Western Front to the clifftops of Gallipoli, and served across the armed forces, from India's first flying ace, Indra Lal Roy, to Gabar Singh Negi, awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn the Second World War, around 2.5 million Indians served in the largest volunteer army in the world, and over 90,000 lost their lives. They were there at key turning points, from D Day to Monte Cassino, and in the skies, like pilot Mohinder Singh Pujji, who insisted on flying in modified headgear so he could keep wearing his turban, serving in France, North Africa and Burma. After VE Day, Indian soldiers fought on in Asia as part of the 14th Army, so overlooked it became known as the \"forgotten army\".\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIndian women gave hugely too. During the First World War, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh raised funds for Indian soldiers and volunteered as a Red Cross nurse. In the Second, women like Second Officer Kalyani Sen joined the Women's Royal Indian Naval Service, taking on clerical work, decoding and military maintenance.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFor every story told here, there are millions more that could have been.
